Question : GW2 character name?
Does name taken in Guild Wars will be reserved in
Guild Wars 2? If yes, for how long? If no, first arrived first served? Thank you. ^_^ |

great question.
I was wondering the same for guild names. Not that I want my guild name to be safe, just to keep famous names out of some idiot's hands. |

Correct me if I'm mistaken but I'm sure ANET said there would be a method to transfer names only into Guild Wars 2. And some kind of transfer for Guilds (no word on what though).

Way too soon to speculate on that since it will not even be in beta till sometime next year. Since they have the HOM though and it unlocks stuff for GW2 then I would think your names would be reserved atleast for some time.

Well, there's some speculation involved as we do not know all the details.
Will only people who've entered the HoM have their name's reserved? (not necessarily anything unlocked, just walked into the HoM). Or will all 4 million players have all their names reserved from all their accounts.... that seems unlikely. Esp. with accounts that have not been used in years. Just to be safe, I'm going to at least get all the Characters who I want their names reserved to enter the HoM. |

My best guess is that the names will be reserved, but in a customized manner. So say for instance your name is Bob Dillan. In GW2, if you choose the option to carry the name forward, it will become "Bob Dillan II" where the II will be tacked on the end to show that it was carried over from GW1. This would also mean that some other person could take the name "Bob Dillan" in GW2. By using this method, people who start playing GW2 very late will still be able to carry their character name forward. Altho, it might seem kinda silly considering how many "II" people there will be in the game. Even more awkard would be people in GW1 who went and named their character something like "Andy Kaufmann II". Then in GW2 they would be "Andy Kaufmann II II".... I mean what kind of a name is andy kaufman tootoo? Sounds egyptian
The alternative which I would prefer, is if instead of tacking a suffix like "II" at the end, they highlight our name in gold or green colour to show that your character is unique and from GW1. The problem here is if you meet another person with the same name as you, it might get confusing if people forget about the name text colour. It'd be like confusing Brad Pitt the actor with Brad Pitt the insurance salesman from small town kentucky. That and also the person with the same name but the default name text colour (to signify that they are a native GW2 character) might be crucified as a hack or a fraud or "not the real deal"..... knowing some of the childish people who play guild wars, this is not too farfetched. But even so, personally I'd prefer this method. Just make the name text a unique colour to show GW1 prestige. Just realized, I dunno how it'd be possible to message the right person so I dunno how my 2nd idea would work heh. Bleh let ANET figure it out =b Last edited by My Sweet Revenga; Sep 19, 2007 at 08:12 PM // 20:12.. |

Also, they stated that character names will be saved and the only way to get them in GW2 will be if you connect your GW2 account to your GW1 account which is how you would be getting stuff from the HoM anyways. |

I'm not a fan of saving character names personally. New game, new everything. ! I also want to be able to have a z axis, so I expect that to be true in GW2. lol

What I'm really afraid ANET is gonna do is do some kind of pre-order or collector's edition gimick and give a 3-day head start where you ONLY have these 3 days to reserve or carry forward your char's name, and it's first come first serve. God I hope they don't use this method cuz it's be just one huge flame fest on guru with 20 individual threads complaining about stolen char names...... I'm glad our names will be saved.
I don't want someone taking my name in Guild Wars 2. Period. |

yes they can and yes they will like it or not they said your present GW1 names would be reserved IF YOU CHOSE TO DO SO the GW1 names used in GW1 are not going to be available for you to grab in GW2 as someone may wait a few months before buying GW2 after it is released. so you have no imagination and someone else beat you to legolas |

2) I'm rather hoping that by some miracle, ANET might read some of the comments in this thread and consider the pros and cons of maybe finding an alternate solution rather than "OK let's just lock down all 5 million names (rough estimate) even if half of them and the accounts they are linked to haven't been in use in the last 3 years". But you know what? If they only increase the name character limit beyond 19 chars, that alone would probably make most people happy. I know I'd be happy since I've had plenty of name ideas that turned out to be 20-21 chars long... 3) I assumed ANET can't just lock down all the names because there's no reason to. Probably the only way to transfer your name to GW2 is through the HOM? Then simply don't reserve a name if the account doesn't have GWEN. If you don't have GWEN why bother reserving any name on that account as they clearly have no intention of guaranteeing using the name again in GW2? Thus, there's no reason for ANET to lock down EVERY name in GW1. btw @ Loviatar, if you're gonna just say something like "look carefully"..... at what? What am I lookin for exactly? How skillfully you can type boldfaced? You've posted twice now that you seem to have the facts, but without posting any kind of source so the least you can do is link your source so we don't all have to individually go hunting for what we "think" you're referring to. You know what search is like on Guru. Last edited by My Sweet Revenga; Sep 19, 2007 at 10:39 PM // 22:39.. |

I think that it would make sense to reserve them for GW2 through the hall of monuments, but what if someone has the original guild wars + factions. Then picks up GW2, find it to be a lot of fun and sees all this stuff other people got from their old guild wars account and he remembers, "Hey, I got a GW1 account, why don't I go pick up GW:EN (which would probably be $20 by then) and then I can get some of this stuff." His character enters hall of monuments, which by your idea would reserve his name in GW2, and when he next logs onto GW2 decides to remake his old character, and lo and behold, it is taken, then what? Is it the other person's fault or his because didn't pick up GW:EN soon enough?
